The "Summer Slide" is the tendency for students to lose some of their achievement gains they made during the previous school year. The Summer Slide can result is students falling behind an average of 2 months in reading during the summer, and this is cumulative, with these learning losses building up each summer. Summer learning losses accounts for ⅔ of the 9th grade achievement gap in reading between students from low-income households to their higher-income peers. Here are links to activities and information about preventing the Summer Slide.
