How can I help my child at home?

Reinforcing academics at home is a great way to set your child up for success throughout their elementary years. One way to assist your child at home is to ensure that they are reading daily. Students need access to books at their reading levels, and they need the ability to choose books that appeal to them. Students at Knob Hill in grades 1-5 will check out one library book per week and can take that home. Visits to the San Marcos Public Library is a fantastic way to give them more access to a wide-variety of books. After your child reads, ask them questions about what they have read. Discussing books and showing interest in their reading can motivate students to read more. Also, research shows that when students see their parents and other family members reading, it will motivate them to read more frequently. The statistics on reading support daily reading at home as one of the best ways to help students progress in school.

One of the best ways to help your child at home in the area of math is to ensure that they have memorized their basic math facts. First graders should be working on writing and recognizing numbers to 100. They should practice addition and subtraction facts up to 10 with fluency and up to 20 using a strategy. Second graders should be reviewing those same addition and subtraction facts, counting by 2, 5, and 10, and telling time to the nearest 5 minutes. They can also practice counting money. Third grade is all about solidifying their addition and subtraction facts, adding and subtracting larger numbers, and memorizing their multiplication facts to 10. In fourth grade, they should be revisiting their multiplication facts to keep them fresh in their minds and reviewing various addition and subtraction. By fifth grade, they should be reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also need practice with using math in the real world.
